Christopher made us the most delicious treat this week, and I thought it would be perfect for a summertime FHE treat! He made us Watermelon Agua Frescas, but you can make it from any fruit you have on hand. It was so sweet and refreshing, and each time I got thirsty I was happy to remember this tasty drink was in the fridge! The amounts of sugar and water may have to be adjusted to taste since each fruit varies in thickness and sweetness. For the watermelon, he just filled our blender (we have a big one – 70 oz., I think) with chunks of watermelon, added enough water to fill in all the extra space, and blended it up. Then he strained it, added the sugar and lime, and then added about 50% again as much water. It was perfect! Here’s the basic recipe. Adjust as needed to get a sweet drink, similar to lemonade, but with a watermelon (or other fruity) flavor.
3 cups fresh fruit
8 cups water
sugar, 1/4 cup or more to taste
Juice of 1 lime (optional)
Place fruit, 2 cups water, sugar, and lime juice in a blender. Blend until smooth. If you desire a smoother, less pulpy drink, strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth. Add the remaining water. Taste and adjust sugar & water if needed. Drink should be thin but flavorful – a sweet, fruity flavored water.
For best results, chill completely before serving. Otherwise, use less water to account for melted ice.
